오랜 경력에서 나온 노하우는 결코 쉽게 따라 올 수 없습니다.
원칙에 충실하고 기본을 지키는 사람
김잉곤 박사가 18여년의 의대 교수 생활을 마감하고, 압구정에 아담한 개인병원(압구정필 성형외과)를 개원했다. 하지만 내게는 김박사가 여전히 교수로만 보일 뿐이다. 아마 앞으로도 그 티를 쉽게 벗지는 못할 것 같다.
한양의대 성형외과의 주임 교수이자, 대한 성형외과 학회의 중진 임원을 역임했던 경력 때문이기도 하지만, 평소에 그가 수술과 치료, 그리고 학문에 있어서 말 그대로 원리 원칙만을 고집하여 실천해 왔음을 익히 알고 있기 때문이다.
그의 성실한 태도는 흉터나 눈, 코 등의 기본적인 성형 수술을 할 때에도 세심하고 치밀한 기술로 한치의 소홀함도 허용하지 않는데서 잘 나타난다. 동료 교수들의 말에 따르면, 이러한 기본적이 원칙에 충실하였기에 안면 윤곽 성형술, 지방 흡입술 등의 체형 교정 수술이 현 단계로 발전하는 데 있어서도 그가 큰 공헌을 할 수 있었다고 한다.
오랜 경험과 새로운 수술법의 개발도...
김잉곤 박사는 '오랜 경험'과 함께 '새로운 수술법 개발'의 기록을 보유하고 있는 사람이다.
그는 1993년 내시경 성형 수술을 국내 최초로 도입하였으며 동양인에 맞게 개발하여, 세계 최고 권위의 성형외과 학술지인 '미국 성형외과 학회지' 2001년 11월호에 발표한 바 있다.
또한 그는 1993년부터 유륜이나 겨드랑이를 통하는 유방 확대수술 대신 배꼽을 통한 유방확대 수술을 도입 개발하여, 겨드랑이를 통한 수술의 합병증이나 흉터 문제를 해결하였다.(그러나 이렇게 좋은 수술 방법이 한국에서는 널리 보급되고 있지 못한데, 그 주요한 원인은 대부분이 그 시술 방법을 잘 모르는데에 있다. 현재 그는 약 29년째 가슴성형수술의 경력을 보유하고 있다.)
'내시경을 이용한 종아리 축소 수술'을 처음으로 개발하여 국내외 학계에 큰 센세이션을 일으킨 것도 바로 그이다. 이에 대한 논문은 미국 성형외과 학회지 2000년 9월호에 게재되었으며, 또한 이 내용은 2001년 2월 22일(목) 미국의 유력 일간지인 '월스트리트 저널' 1면과 5면에도 톱기사로 보도되었고 영국 BBC 방송에서도 2001년 3월 24일 오전 6시 56분에 방송된 바 있다.
앞으로의 그는...
그간 학문 및 기술 발전뿐만 아니라 수많은 제자를 양성하는 데에도 기여한 바 있는 그는 아마 자신이 너무 오랫동안 대학에 있었다고 생각하는 것 같다. 후학들에게 자리를 내줘야 하는 것 역시 스승이 해야 할 일이라며 개원을 결심했다는 소식에 만감이 교차한다.
차분하고 다정다감한 그의 성격으로 미루어 보아 훌륭한 의사로서 사명을 다할 것이 분명하지만, 교육 및 학문 분아에서 저명한 교수로서 지켜왔던 그의 빈자리가 당분간 크게 느껴질 것 같다.
아무튼 새로운 시작을 준비중인 김잉곤 박사가 앞으로도 그를 찾는 환자들에게 행복을 가져다주는 의사가 될 것이라는 점을 믿어 의심치 않는다.
